May 20, 2025—Cy-Fair High School senior Nicholas Oliver was among 20 Houston-area high school seniors selected to receive a KPRC Senior Scholarship, sponsored by American Furniture Warehouse. Oliver was surprised with a check for $2,500 on March 3 at Cy-Fair High School. Classmates, family and Cy-Fair faculty and staff joined in for the celebration.
Every spring semester, KPRC representatives travel to various high schools in greater Houston to surprise students with $2,500 scholarships to a college of their choice.
Oliver has been completely blind since birth, but he does not allow it to stop him from achieving his goals. As an accomplished musician and a community volunteer, Oliver has defied the odds as a standout pianist with more than 13 years of experience. He also plays the keyboard and the trumpet in the Cy-Fair marching band, and he is a dedicated volunteer through the Young Men’s Service League, the National Honor Society and the National Federation of the Blind.
Among his many accomplishments, Oliver is also a winner of the Paderewski award from the National Guild of Piano Teachers. The award is presented to musicians who memorize and master ten pieces of music and demonstrate strong musicianship.
“I’m really excited to win this scholarship,” Oliver said. “I think it is going to be truly helpful to me in college as I study computer science to help make websites more accessible for the visually impaired.”
Oliver plans to attend the Colorado School for the Blind and transition to a four-year university to study Computer Science.
