  1. Apply as early as possible so you have plenty of time to verify that all pieces have been completed.
  2. Read all application instructions carefully and proofread your application before you submit. Pay close attention to deadlines!! Make a copy of everything you send in.
  3. After submission, monitor your application status. Respond to all college requests for additional information and keep records of your responses.

General College Application Resources

College Visits

The resource to the right is from a college admission colleague, Rebecca Chabrow. Look for the colleges you are interested in and see if they have a virtual tour available.

Another resource is The College Tour. This is a TV series with each  episode being dedicated to a particular college.

What is Apply Texas?

The ApplyTexas is a universal application for all Texas public universities as well as participating community and private colleges. The goal is to offer a centralized means for students to apply to the wonderful institutions available in Texas.

*Apply Texas moved their opening date from August 1st to July 1st. Each college/university chooses when their school information is available, so some will choose to open on August 1st or later.

What is The Common Application?

More than 800 colleges use The Common Application as their admission application. It is also a central system for students to apply to a variety of colleges including-public, private, large, small, secular, and religious. By collecting all of the information in one place, it prevents students from repeating their information over and over again.

College Terminology

More vocabulary??? Knowing some college terms will help you better navigate the college application process.

Anatomy of the Application

Other than the online application, students need to make sure that the college/university has all appropriate materials. Appropriate materials may be required or recommended, and it is up to the student to ensure the college/university has the full picture.

  • Application Fee Waiver - if you are on Free/Reduced Lunch or have a financial hardship, you may qualify. See Mrs. Stockton in "Book Room B" next to 3032 if you have questions.
  • Test Scores - make sure to send your official SAT or ACT scores. Copies you have are not official.
  • Transcript - students need to request the official high school transcript from the Registrar's Office (located near the main entrance of the school)
  • Resume - Students may choose to submit an expanded resume offering additional information about each achievement. It should include details about each activity and the number of hours/weeks spent on each activity. An expanded resume should be submitted if all of your activities do not fit on the online application and/or if the student feels it is necessary to elaborate on certain aspects.
  • Letters of Recommendation - If recommendation letters are not required, only include them if they add value to your application. Ask someone who knows you well, but can offer an unbiased opinion. Make sure you are following proper etiquette.
  • Essays -  This is one of the only parts of the application that shows your character and strengths as a person. The essays should enhance your application, not just repeat your resume.
